Celle solari a film sottile: su Nature Communications uno studio co-firmato da ricercatori dell’Università di Parma

È stato pubblicato sulla prestigiosa rivista Nature Communications l'articolo Direct evidence for grain boundary passivation in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells through alkali-fluoride post deposition treatments, frutto di un lavoro di ricerca cui hanno partecipato due ricercatori dell'Università di Parma.

Giovanna Sozzi e Roberto Menozzi, docenti di Elettronica al Dipartimento di Ingegneria e Architettura, sono tra gli autori dello studio, una collaborazione internazionale con i colleghi Nicoleta Nicoara, Roby Manaligod, Sascha Sadewasser(International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, INL, Braga, Portogallo), Philip Jackson, Dimitrios Hariskos e Wolfram Witte(Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung Baden-Württemberg, ZSW, Stuttgart, Germania). Il lavoro si inquadra nel progetto Sharc25 (finanziato dalla UE nell'ambito del programma H2020), finalizzato al miglioramento dell'efficienza energetica delle celle solari in tecnologia CIGS per la prossima generazione di moduli fotovoltaici a costo ridotto.

In particolare l'articolo pubblicato si concentra sullo studio, tramite microscopia KPF (Kelvin Probe Force) e simulazioni numeriche tri-dimensionali (delle quali si è occupato il gruppo di ricerca dell'Ateneo), della correlazione tra le caratteristiche della struttura policristallina delle celle e le loro prestazioni. Le proprietà e le prestazioni delle celle policristalline - cioè formate da grani cristallini con diversa orientazione - dipendono infatti fortemente dalle caratteristiche dei bordi di grano, che possono essere influenzate durante la fabbricazione delle celle da trattamenti con fluoruri alcalini. L'articolo individua una importante correlazione tra questi elementi alcalini, alcune caratteristiche dei bordi di grano, e le prestazioni delle celle, conpotenziali ricadute sulla produzione di celle e moduli con più alta efficienza.
